Summary

Seventeen-year-old Alice and her mother have spent most of Alice’s life on the road, always a step ahead of the uncanny bad luck biting at their heels。 But when Alice’s grandmother, the reclusive author of a cult-classic book of pitch-dark fairy tales, dies alone on her estate, the Hazel Wood, Alice learns how bad her luck can really get: Her mother is stolen away―by a figure who claims to come from the Hinterland, the cruel supernatural world where her grandmother's stories are set。 Alice's only lead is the message her mother left behind: “Stay away from the Hazel Wood。”

Alice has long steered clear of her grandmother’s cultish fans。 But now she has no choice but to ally with classmate Ellery Finch, a Hinterland superfan who may have his own reasons for wanting to help her。 To retrieve her mother, Alice must venture first to the Hazel Wood, then into the world where her grandmother's tales began―and where she might find out how her own story went so wrong。

There's a lot I liked here, but it struggles from some pacing issues and tone shifts that keep it from being truly exceptional。 There's a lot I liked here, but it struggles from some pacing issues and tone shifts that keep it from being truly exceptional。 。。。more

This was cute and really creative! I loved the section about actually being in the Hazel Wood and meeting the story characters that live there。 I would love a spin-off or novella or something with more about that。

Düstere Märchengeschichte, die sehr viel Potential hat

Quite a rollercoaster。 I quit the book after reading the firts chapters, but felt bad and gave it another shot once I discored that it didn't have romance。 The middle is the best part。 An urban fantasy, always moving forward with a quest feeling then portal and here we go。 The middle was more exciting to me than the end。 Quite a rollercoaster。 I quit the book after reading the firts chapters, but felt bad and gave it another shot once I discored that it didn't have romance。 The middle is the best part。 An urban fantasy, always moving forward with a quest feeling then portal and here we go。 The middle was more exciting to me than the end。 。。。more

Alice and her mother have spent years trying to escape an ever-present “bad luck”, but, when her mysterious grandmother’s death brings on a new wave of danger, Alice must conquer magical forces to save her mother and the only life she has ever known。 A perfect fall read!

I wanted to love this book! I love the concept (fairy tale/fantasy mixed with contemporary setting) but I did not like the narrator and I had a hard time following the storyline at times, which may have also been thanks to me listening on audiobook。 I also wish that there was more time spent in the fantasy portion of the novel—it was introduced in the second half of the book and ended just when things were getting interesting。 The other books in the series seem to follow more of what I wish was I wanted to love this book! Weird and wicked and lovely。 A good read for October!

It was an ok book。 If I could rate it properly, I would probably rate it 3。5, but since the rating system on goodreads isn't as precise, I'll go with 3。 There were parts which really hooked me up, especially in the beginning - it made a train ride of 5 hours pass rather quickly, but there were parts which seemed a bit。。。 pretentious to me, for lack of a better word, and it would bore me a bit sometimes。 I really liked the "The only way out is through," even if it turned out to be a lie。 I still It was an ok book。 If I could rate it properly, I would probably rate it 3。5, but since the rating system on goodreads isn't as precise, I'll go with 3。 There were parts which really hooked me up, especially in the beginning - it made a train ride of 5 hours pass rather quickly, but there were parts which seemed a bit。。。 pretentious to me, for lack of a better word, and it would bore me a bit sometimes。 I really liked the "The only way out is through," even if it turned out to be a lie。 I still like it。When I finished, it left me a bit meh, even though I liked how it ended in the middle of living, not really having a resolute end。 All in all, it was the first book I finished in a long time, so I've got to give it credit at least for that。 。。。more

**3。5** I loved the first half of this book but I started to encounter a lot of little disappointments as I kept reading。 My love for the plot twists in this story is really what kept me reading it after about 200 pages。 I also think this was perfect as a stand-alone and I haven’t decided if I’m going to pick up the second one or not。 Overall I enjoyed this book but I didn’t love it。

I really loved this book。 The images it created were enchanting and always engaging, I definitely am biased because my favorite genre of stories is those stories-within-a-story (see The Game of Love and Death)。 The relationship between characters was realistic and interesting, but not too over the top。 The strain yet complexity of Alice and her mom's relationship was perfect, along with the use of Finch as the sidekick everyone needs who is slightly pining for the main character。 Would recommend I really loved this book。 The images it created were enchanting and always engaging, I definitely am biased because my favorite genre of stories is those stories-within-a-story (see The Game of Love and Death)。 The relationship between characters was realistic and interesting, but not too over the top。 The strain yet complexity of Alice and her mom's relationship was perfect, along with the use of Finch as the sidekick everyone needs who is slightly pining for the main character。 Would recommend! 。。。more

I just。。。huh。 Like every gif of somebody being like wtf was me trying to read this。 The hinterland fairy tales were spooky and good, the rest of it not so much my jam。

The plot was lacklustre and the characters were intolerable (except maybe Finch) The first half was boring and the second half was confusing and seemed very unorganized。 I’m so disappointed because the concept of the book is incredibly interesting but the execution was horrible。 Don’t even get me started on the main character Alice。 She’s the embodiment of “I’m not like other girls”。 The only thing I can say I enjoyed was the short stories from “The Hinterland”。

Good idea, dragged on too long

This was a very unique take on a fairy tale。 Not only did the fairy tale harken back to original fairy tales--in being creepy--but this fairy tale bled into the modern world。 Alice and her mother live a nomadic existence, always running away when something dark and unexplainable happens。 Her mother never talks about her Grandmother, an author with a cult following, or the house she grew up in, Hazel Wood。 When Alice’s Grandmother dies and leaves her mother everything, life changes and Alice is t This was a very unique take on a fairy tale。 Not only did the fairy tale harken back to original fairy tales--in being creepy--but this fairy tale bled into the modern world。 Alice and her mother live a nomadic existence, always running away when something dark and unexplainable happens。 Her mother never talks about her Grandmother, an author with a cult following, or the house she grew up in, Hazel Wood。 When Alice’s Grandmother dies and leaves her mother everything, life changes and Alice is the one to fix it。 This was a very intriguing read that I enjoyed very much。For the full review, check out my blog (link in bio)。 。。。more

DNF at 30%I’m a big FAN of anything related to the fairytales world, and when i have heard about the dark creepy fairytales in this book, i was excited, even with all the negative reviews about it I thought it would work well with my taste, turned out i was wrong。

This book was a lot better than I expected it to be, after I read the first chapter。 I usually don't like contemporary settings, but this one is an exception。 I don't entirely know why, but I really love the atmosphere this book has。 I absolutely adore Finch and how he puts up with Alice's temperments, and how he takes care of her。 I did find near the end the book got a little confusing and fast-paced。 Besides that I have no further complaints, this was a great spooky read! :) This book was a lot better than I expected it to be, after I read the first chapter。 I usually don't like contemporary settings, but this one is an exception。 I don't entirely know why, but I really love the atmosphere this book has。 I absolutely adore Finch and how he puts up with Alice's temperments, and how he takes care of her。 I did find near the end the book got a little confusing and fast-paced。 Besides that I have no further complaints, this was a great spooky read! :) 。。。more

Two stars because I’m a good person and because I liked the stories from Alice’s grandmother that appears every now and then through the book。First of all I want to specify that the first and second half of the book are so drastically different that it seems as if they belong to two different stories。The first part in one word; boring, it never gets to the heart of the matter, it seemed like a huge prologue to the book that actually started in the last few chapters。 Once I finished it I felt as Two stars because I’m a good person and because I liked the stories from Alice’s grandmother that appears every now and then through the book。First of all I want to specify that the first and second half of the book are so drastically different that it seems as if they belong to two different stories。The first part in one word; boring, it never gets to the heart of the matter, it seemed like a huge prologue to the book that actually started in the last few chapters。 Once I finished it I felt as if the author had thrown in my forehead a brick full of everything that she hadn't written before cause she had realized that SOMETHING EVENTUALLY HAD TO HAPPEN IN THIS BOOK = let's put everything at the end。As if it wasn’t enough the characters are static throughout the novel and really, the only thing I liked about the book was the chapters that featured Alice's grandmother stories。 。。。more

Such an enchantingly dark fairy tale! I just couldn’t stop thinking about this story when I wasn’t reading it - it was so addicting! I really liked all the characters, especially Alice and Finch, and the fairy tale characters were so intriguing。 It was actually surprising how sinister the plot became; I really forgot it was a YA book! I really hope this becomes a series and seems like it would be a great show or movie。 Highly recommend! 。。。more

3。5 stars!I enjoyed the whimsy of this book。 It was a bit of a slow start but it was still an easy read!I felt like the world building was a little vague, and I would’ve enjoyed more clarity? I don’t think we ever stop seeing things through our protagonists hazy gaze。 Still, I enjoyed this read。 I have trouble believing there’s a sequel because it wrapped up so nicely。 It’s a great October read!
